About Us

Queensland Writers Centre (QWC) is the leading provider of specialised writing services in Queensland. Through its annual programs, it promotes skills development and professional practice and works to advance the recognition of Queensland writers and writing, locally, nationally, and internationally.

In its 20 year history QWC has remained an essential industry association among writers. Leading a writing and reading hub for Queensland on level 2 of the State Library of Queensland, QWC partners with Book Links Qld, Queensland Poetry Festival, Childrens Book Council is a fundamental cornerstone of the Queensland writing sector, providing indispensable resources for all kinds of writers, and an objective knowledge base for industry professionals.

Our mission is to support and promote a writing culture in Queensland by contributing to the professional development and practice of writers locally, and by advancing their recognition nationally and internationally.

Our vision is to create and support a strong Queensland writing sector and strong markets for Queensland writing through the provision of specialised resources, information and professional development for Queensland writers.

Our members are published authors, emerging authors, children’s authors, journalists, editors, agents, publishers, poets, storytellers, project managers, freelancers, teachers, lecturers and critics. We provide specialist support beginner writers through to big names in writing and publishing.

A key priority of QWC is regional engagement. Through a robust network of partnerships with local councils, regional universities and community organisations, QWC has delivered more than 24 events to members in locations as diverse as Blackall, Bundaberg, Cairns, Charters Towers, Cunnamulla, Emerald, Gold Coast, Longreach, Mackay, Maryborough, Rockhampton, Roma, Sunshine Coast, and Townsville.

QWC is also the proud publisher of The Australian Writer's Marketplace. Available as both a print book or online subcription, The Australian Writer's Marketplace is the national guide to Australia's writing and publishing in

In 2009, QWC launched the Australian branch of the Institute for the Future of the Book, or if: book Australia. if: book Australia will act as a think-tank to promote new forms of digital publishing and explore ways to boost connections between writers and audiences. This is a new national centre of excellence for digital literature and is only the third centre of excellence of its kind for digital literature established in the world, after New York and London.

Queensland Writers Centre acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as traditional owners and custodians of Queensland.
